Filming Railway Facilities

Many of Austria’s scenic train lines with original historic railway buildings from the turn of the century have been used in movies (i.e.: THE TRAIN with Ben Kingsley, and the Austrian TV series REX: A COP’S BEST FRIEND).

To rent historic steam engines and trains, and for permits to run a special train, an application has to be received by the responsible authorities two weeks in advance.

Filming on trains, along the railway lines and in train stations of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), is possible at any time, as long as regular service is not impaired. This also applies to the special trains to Semmering and Mariazell and to filming on railway bridges. Written applications should be submitted to the regional ÖBB branch at least one week prior to filming. Proof of insurance has to be included.

Historic trains

A special department of the ÖBB is in charge of renting historical trains: Nostalic Travel is also responsible for permits on the following railway lines: NÖ-Südwestbahn, Aspangbahn, Gutensteinerbahn, Neubergerbahn, Mariazellerbahn, Waldviertel/Gmünd, Steyertalbahn and Arlbergbahn.

If the trains are to be used on the ÖBB’s rail network, a written request has to be made at least three weeks in advance.
