Visa (entitlement for admission into Austria)
Citizens of EU (European Union) member countries and the EEA (European Economic Community) enjoy free and unhindered passage within the EU and the EEA.
May 1, 2004, the 15 existing EU member countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden) were joined by the following 10 countries: Cyprus (Greek territory only), Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia. Current EEA countries are: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway.
Time-restricted, temporary permits regarding the free movement of labor and services across borders exist between the above countries and have to be taken into consideration.
For purposes of a short sojourn, US citizens as well as persons bearing Australian, Israeli, Japanese and Canadian passports do not require a visa (“visa-free entry”). Conditions for entry applicable to citizens of all countries can be looked up at the Internet address http://www.bmaa.gv.at.
A travel visa entitles the bearer to stay for a short time within the Schengen area (the 15 EU countries, as of January 20, 2004, except Great Britain and Ireland) as a tourist or, as a business traveller, for a total duration of no more than three months within a half-year. However, visas do not entitle the bearer to gainful employment. Visas are valid for not more than six months, and are issued abroad – and only abroad – by the Austrian representative authority (embassy or consulate). They cannot be renewed or prolonged within Austria.
